Book Release Event at Rêve Coffee Roasters

200 Jefferson Street, Lafayette

August 27, 6-9 PM

Lafayette resident and Louisiana native, Bessie Adams Senette has published her first book, “Cutting the Clouds, a Bayou Mystic’s Poems, Musings, and Imaginings.” It is an autobiographical collection of poems and essays about the life and culture of her bayou upbringing and the spirituality that informs her traditional healing gifts.

Many local artists and photographers contributed original works to this stunning, full-color, coffee table book. More than just a keepsake though, this book invites all its readers to look more deeply at their own experiences and value them as perfect spiritual teachings. Senette says, “ This is not a book about healing, this is a healing book.”

  • “Cutting the Clouds, invites us to all that, (to heal) and more. Through these pages we get an intimate viewing of the beauty of deep sorrow and exquisite joy, with deep appreciation for the learning gleaned from all held between those two points. The words and images call us to look—look deeply; stop the busy mind; dare to open
dormant places within ourselves.” —- Fran Clarke
 – Developer & Facilitator of ‘The Heroine’s Journey’
  • “The fifty miles from Thibodaux to Golden Meadow in Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, is often jokingly called ‘the longest street in the world.’ Swamp in the back, bayou in the front, the houses line-up so well that locals say a baseball thrown yard-to-yard could travel the two cities in an hour. Surrounded by family and friends, Bessie Senette came of age and found inspiration in both this land and its people. Farmers, fishermen, healers, and storytellers, Bessie Senette chronicles her life in this ordinary, yet extraordinary place through picture, poetry, and prose. Yet, if Cutting the Clouds has a heroine, it is not Bessie but her mother—Ruby. From the vantage point of her own journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance, Bessie exalts the unsung bravery of women like her mother.” Sarah Senette
